Bahamas, Nov. 10,1989- A
plane crashed off in Paradise Island on Monday, killing hundreds people and two
of four stewardesses, only five passengers, pilot, co-pilot and two of the
stewardesses saved.
The twin-engine plane,
operated by Chalk's Ocean Airways of Fort Lauderdale, had just taken off from a
narrow channel used by cruise ships and was heading for California in the
Paradise Island when it crashed, emergency officials said by evening, police and
fire brigades had recovered all but one body.
The motive of this accident is still observed by the
police and National Transportation Safety Board. Mark V. Rosenker, acting
chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said late Monday that the
agency's investigation would begin when the wreckage was lifted from the water
on Tuesday morning. Fifteen investigators had arrived in Paradise Island by
Monday night, he said, and were preparing to pore over maintenance and other
records and listen to the cockpit voice recorder from the 58-year-old plane.
Carl Frank, the saved
passenger said hearing an explosion and seeing the smoke appeared from the part
of the plane.Witnesses saw smoke boil from the Grumman G-73T Turbine Mallard
plane as it fell from a dull gray sky around 2:40 p.m. Some also said that the
smoke appeared to come from the left engine, and that part of the plane's left
wing came off just before it smacked into the water.
